Howard and I spent the day criss-crossing between Switzerland and Germany. The border zigzags and is not well marked. But we developed a fool-proof algorithm for detecting which country we were in:
If it looks like it's out of a storybook, then Switzerland
If not Switzerland, or if there's a bakery and a town water fountain, then Germany.
We are also very much enjoying the clear and straightforward signage in this part of the world. See, for example, the train-track warning sign for cyclists.
