After a steep climb out of Nazaré, we cruised miles and miles along the rim of the Atlantic on a safe and smooth bike lane.
Puzzled by a weird dogleg on today's EuroVelo 1 route, we decided to cut a few miles by taking a more direct path across a bridge. Only after we reached the bridge did we understand that the bridge's bike lane was closed. To cross it, we had to salmon up a lane closed to construction, and then dart out into oncoming traffic. Bless their souls, the drivers didn't even honk at our Keystone Cop antics.
Figueira proved to be a charming city with delicious restaurants and well-heeled tourists on holiday. I ate a plate of chickpeas and fell asleep to the heartbeat of a party in the city's center.
Distance: 62.41 miles
Total: 4,040 miles
I agree - chickpeas are an underestimated universal comfort food :). Glad it helped you sleep!
