The French committee that decides such things voted Angles-sur-l'Anglin one of the prettiest villages in France. Having bicycled through quite a few villages in France, I have to agree. Sure, lots of villages feature a river, a bridge, a castle, and cobblestone streets curving through medieval houses and shops. But Angles-sur-l'Anglin's river is swimmable and still has its mill. Bright flowers punctuate the austere stones and walls. And its castle's ruins suggest more magesty than an intact castle ever could.
But getting a same-day reservation at a hotel in town was not possible, so I stayed at a cute B & B called La Ligne in the middle of a sunflower field outside of town. It was also beautiful, but what made the place was the kind woman who greeted me with a cute kid on her hip. My room didn't have a/c, which is sort of sucky on a day with highs greater than 100. But hospitality can move me to forgive pretty much any atmospheric flaw.
