It's the apple harvest in Serbia, and so I spent the day riding alongside tractors and orchards. A few sweet towns dotted my route. As is the case throughout Europe, the small towns of Serbia are so much nicer than the small towns of the U.S. We need to do better by rural America.
Entering Belgrade by bike is decidedly nicer than by bus. I rode along the Danube on a pristine bike path, and took a cyclist-only elevator with a lovely family from the bridge to the path around the Turkish fortress.
Biking through Belgrade is more challenging. I wanted to swing by a bike shop to check out a new tapping noise on Louise, but I simply could not figure out how to navigate around a frightening tunnel. So I gave up and stayed in the Old Town, sleeping at the same hotel and eating at the same vegan restaurant I did the last time I came through. When you change residences every day, it's refreshing to be a regular for once.
The server at the restaurant recognized me from the last time I ate there. This time, I explained that I am bicycling around the world. As I left with Louise, he brought me apples for the road.
