After bidding adieu to my favorite Belgrade innkeeper, I sucked in my hips to squeeze through a terrifying traffic tunnel. When some construction detritis blocked the two foot wide foot path, a kindly bus driver stopped traffic so that I could shimmy past without dying. Bless him and the millions of drivers who have not killed me even once.
I passed through small towns with careful drivers and thoughtful signage (see the one warning cyclists to cross the road so as not to "punch" their tires), and then through stripey countryside with boiling clouds threatening rain.
At last, I arrived at a campground in Bela Crkva. The proprietor, a lovely man named Branko who was educated in the U.S. and spoke perfect English, suggested that I canoe to dinner at the restaurant across the lake. I thanked the Girl Scouts for my mad canoeing skills and set out for the final adventure of the day.
I wish I could canoe to dinner every night.
